Stewardship Pemberton harvests crabapples along the main street in Pemberton. These mature trees were planted in honour and memory of local veterans and community members. While beautiful, they attract black bears into our town each year. Bears that become conditioned to accessing human food sources in urban areas are at higher risk of being killed due to human-bear conflict and public safety concerns. SPS removes the attractant – taking the fruit to the Pemberton Community Centre kitchen where we turn it into stunning seasonal crabapple jelly.
This project educates on:
- identifying and managing managing bear attractants
- how we can better co-exist with bears
- the importance of healthy and local eating
- food security
- how to preserve food through canning
